Muirfield ParkHeber Valley Self Reliance Group was given an opportunity to present our proposal to Heber City Council to turn Muirfield Park into a lovely place for families, children and dogs, while also using some areas of the park to teach families gardening, greenhouse gardening, and how to grow and care for an orchard.
We are meeting again with the city council to propose a five-year plan of permanent park structures, greenhouses, an orchard, and various areas to have citizens grow food. |
BLADESMITH & BARBECUE EVENTDaniel Olsen hosted the Bladesmith and Barbecue event at Soldier Hollow May 13th. It was a beautiful place, with a view of Heber Valley. Three men competed in making a knife in one day, then a Blade Chopper competition. Jaxon won first place in the bladesmith forging competition; Matt won second place and John won third place. Five rollicking bands kept everyone tapping their feet as they ate the delicious barbecue and watched the competitions. Vendors sold all sorts of survival treasures, such as seeds, knives, and survival kits. |
For the Barbecue Competition, John Bliss won Best Chicken, Best Sauce, and Grand Champion.

Famous and Skilled Men from Survival ShowsThese very skilled survivalists gave their time to support Daniel in his first Bladesmith and Barbecue event.
Each of these men have tested themselves and their ability to survive in the wild. They acted as judges for the bladesmithing contest and the barbecue contests. As a panel, they told about some of their adventures, then answered questions from the crowd. |
Tour of Russ and Sandra Olsen's Starry Garden FarmMay 6th, visitors came to tour Russ and Sandra's Starry Garden Farm. With a high-tunnel greenhouse, landscape fabric, and good compost, it is possible to grow a big garden with less work. The landscape fabric prevents most weeds and holds moisture in. (link)

Tour of Mike and Josee Petersen's Amazing Greenhouse |
|
May 20th, we toured Mike and Josee's greenhouse. It was so well designed, it can grow things all year round. The greenhouse grew things from many time zones, including tropical trees. In May, they had squash almost ready to pick. Water barrels on the back wall act as a heat sink. Pipes 8 feet underground circulate air to make the greenhouse always above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Everything was healthy, lush, and productive.
